Acupuncture is a 6,000 year old Chinese medical therapy which stimulates the body’s own natural healing process. Inserting needles and/or applying heat or low current electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points can initiate the natural healing process. The classical explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body. Any obstruction in these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up the flow in one part of the body and restricts it in others. When the accumulation of energy occurs is when disease can initiate. Needling acupuncture points to reestablish the regular flow of energy can alleviate these obstructions.
Recent modern medical research findings have shown that acupuncture stimulates one or more of the biological systems, which can, under certain circumstances, increase the rate of healing response. This may be sufficient to cure a disease, or it might only reduce its impact (alleviate some symptoms).
